In the picture the charcoal looks like it has a matte finish and that is the reason I primarily ordered it. I received a glossy one instead.
1Perfect.
Beautiful piece. I haven't used it yet but it looks beautiful with my other Emile Henry purchases: salt pig, oil cruet, spoon rest, etc. It's just the right size and looks beautiful in my kitchen.
5Poor quality, developed cracks within a few months
I bought this for my wife for Christmas. We had another stone mortar and pestle that worked quite well. She wanted something a little larger. This fit the bill, but only a few months in, it developed significant cracks. Given that our previous (but smaller) mortar and pestle set lasted 20+ years without any cracks, doing the same things we always do (garlic and mint mostly), I'm going to guess that this set suffers from a planned obsolescence mentality that plagues almost everything today.UPDATE: My 9-year-old son was grinding mint this morning and the whole mortar broke apart. This is a poor quality product.
1A beautiful piece!
The color and glaze are attractive, and I leave it out even when it's not being used - it's kind of a display item! The mortar is solid and has some weight to it, but it's not too heavy; and the pestle's handle is made of sturdy wood that's as thick as it can be without becoming un-ergomatic, or at least looking odd. The end of the pestle is covered in the same ceramic that the mortar is made from, and they both have just enough roughness to give a light bit of grip as you crush and grind.

Just the right size for grinding cardamom. Lovely on the counter behind the stove. Plan to use for more than cardamom, but haven't yet.
5Excellent!
Beautiful, not too heavy, well made. Perfect size and depth. No complaints!
